In programming, garbage collection is the process of reclaiming memory occupied by objects that are no longer in use. Languages like C and C++ leave memory management up to the programmer, which can lead to memory leaks if not carefully managed. Go, on the other hand, automatically identifies and frees unused memory, allowing developers to focus on writing code rather than manually tracking memory.

  • Concurrency is central to Go’s design: Go applications often run many goroutines (lightweight threads), which need efficient memory management to avoid running out of resources.
  • Low-latency is a key requirement: Many Go applications, such as web servers or real-time data processors, demand predictable response times. This makes efficient and low-latency garbage collection a priority.

Go’s GC is unique in that it emphasizes concurrency and low-latency by using a technique called tricolor mark-and-sweep.
